Dear Friends

It is with a heavy heart that I report the news that Mary Forsythe, our good-hearted friend, lifelong member of Democratic Women, and caregiver for my children, passed away early this morning.

She was a good friend, and my family and I will miss her greatly.

The Democratic Women will honor her at their luncheon July 11. I understand also that she had a particular passion for the mission of the Battered Womens Shelter, so if you are interested in doing something in her memory, you could make a donation to the Shelter in her honor (United Family Services).

There will not be a memorial service, according to her wishes, but we hope to have a gathering of friends to celebrate her life soon.  Keep in touch.

July 6th at 11:30 AM at the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections, 741 Kenilworth Avenue.

Everyone over fifty (50) is eligible for "Senior" Democrats.  We eat lunch together (bring your own sandwich, etc.).  A beverage is provided.  There is a door prize and a $5 "drawing" to add to the fun.  Please join us come!

At-Large Town Hall Meeting, hosted by Mayor Pro Tem Susan Burgess

The Town Hall Meeting will be on Thursday, June 25, 6:30 - 8:30 PM in Room 267 of the Government Center, 600 East Fourth Street.

There will plenty of free parking in Government Center deck. Light refreshments will be served.

Chief Rodney Monroe and others from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and representatives of Neighborhood and Business Sevices will be on hand to present information ranging from organizing community watch programs to how to partner and volunteer with CMPD.

Special emphasis will be given to what neighborhood leaders have identified as the top three crime concerns: break-ins, drugs, and gangs.

Susan Burgess appointed to Board of Trustees of National Housing Conference

Susan Burgess is honored to be appointed to the National Housing Conference (NHC) Board of Trustees. The NHC is dedicated to ensuring that every American, regardless of income, has the opportunity to live in decent housing in a suitable neighborhood.

For more than 75 years, the nonprofit National Housing Conference (NHC) has been the United Voice for Housing. A membership drawn from every industry segment forms the foundation for NHC’s broad, nonpartisan advocacy for national policies and legislation that promotes suitable housing in a safe, decent environment. "Serving on the NHC Board of Trustees is a great opportunity for me to learn more about affordable housing and about what other cities are doing to address this important issue."  Mayor Pro Tem Burgess is the chairperson of the Housing and Neighborhood Development Committee of the Charlotte City Council.   

Rep. Tricia Cotham and Rep. Justin Burr, the two youngest members of the North-Carolina General Assembly, are sponsoring a bill that allow 16- and 17-year-olds to preregister to vote and would require instruction on voter registration and preregistration...

Our city has been hit hard by the current economic crisis. An increasing number of Charlotteans are losing their jobs and our local governments are facing substantial budget shortfalls. Despite these challenges, I am confident that Charlotte can and will emerge an even stronger city than it is today.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (D-NC) has released a Resource Guide to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), better known as the stimulus bill, that will help constituents in North Carolina access funds made available through the package. The 75-page guide breaks down the money allocated to North Carolina by category and program and also includes contact information where interested individuals can receive more information.
